Unique Custom features include Gold “Classic 50′s” Alnico III pickups, Gold Switch ring, jack plate and “speed” knobs and of course that Vintage Buttercream finish and faded binding Headstock featuring Grover 18:1 tuners, Graphtech TUSQ nut and Randy Rhoads Custom truss cover Not only a good illustration of the crack-free neck joint but also the beautifully faded binding and negligible fretware No cracks this side either! The Graphtech saddles make a major improvement to the sound, and cut down on string breakage. Please note the minor blemish to the left of the pickup The non-standard Grover 18:1 tuners are of a higher ratio to improve tuning stability and accuracy. The serial number indicates it’s Korean origin and 2006 date of manufacture. Also visible is the only small chip in the paintwork at the top of the headstock which is not visible when being played, on a stand, in the case etc. Vintage PIO capacitors contribute to this guitar’s unique sound as do the highest available tolerance CTS audio taper pots, even when everything’s on full! The Gold Pickup Selector and Ring are unique to this Randy Rhoads Custom Model Like all the other Gold hardware this jackplate is untarnished No Buckle Rash! There is some minor hazing to the finish at the back but it’s barely visible to the naked eye (even close up!) and it definitely can’t be picked up by the camera A nice shot of the back to complete the set It’d be a crime to carry such a gorgeous instrument about in a gig bag! This comes with an excellent SKB flight case contured to the curves of a Les Paul, not the generic “one size fits all” type The Late Great Randy Rhoads playing his original 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom Based on Randy Rhoads’ 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom (the guitar you can hear on the original recording of “Crazy Train”) and the subsequent Gibson “tribute” which retails at over £3000. The basis of this custom model is a 2006 Tokai Les Paul Custom made in Korea; far superior in build quality and materials than the currently available Chinese Tokais. It has the same solid mahogany body and neck with a maple cap as the original, but the most striking feature is the beautiful “Buttercream” finish and naturally aged binding that sets it apart from the cold “alpine white” of most currently available copies. It appears closer in colour to Randy’s original than Gibson’s “tribute” which has a deeper “beige” finish. The Custom Features include additional Gold hardware, authentic Alnico III pickups, Grover 18;1 tuners, totally upgraded vintage wiring and electrical components, and Graphtech nut and saddles. it comes with a Les Paul Contured SKB Hardshell Flight Case worth over £100 alone! NONE OF THESE FEATURES CAN BE FOUND IN THE STANDARD MODEL PICKUPS Both Randy’s original ’74 and Gibson’s tribute have Alnico III pickups and this is no exception. The pickups chosen were the Classic 50′s Alnico 3 Model. Alnico III pickups have more sustain, sensitivity and note definition than the usual Alnico V of most modern pickups and make a major contribution to Randy’s signature sound HARDWARE The superficial differences between the Randy Rhoads and the standard model are the replacement of the black volume and tone knobs, pickup selector switch and surround ring with Gold hardware, all of which has been done. Instead of the standard Schaller Tuners I have introduced a special set of Grovers engineered at the higher than average ratio of 18:1 which means they’re easier to tune and much more stable. Im a big fan of Graphtech so I’ve installed both a nut and bridge saddles of Black TUSQ material. This has three main qualities; an improvement in richness of tone and harmonics, a friction free surface that greatly increases tuning stability, and the ability to extend string life exponentially. ELECTRONICS The overall sound of a guitar is greatly affected by the type of pots and capacitors used in the volume and tone circuits even when they are “off” (fully turned up). In this guitar I have used the same high tolerance 500K CTS audio taper pots as Gibson and I have acquired some Russian vintage PIO (paper in oil) capacitors of the same spec as those used by Fender and Gibson up until the late eighties. SETUP AND PLAYABILITY The setup has been done with precision instruments ensuring the lowest possible action without rattles buzzes or deadspots. The intonation has been set and tuning stability is excellent. It balances well and the neck is closer in profile to the 50′s Gibson’s ie. thinner than the later “baseball bat” designs It’s in superb condition and feels like a vintage guitar that’s been locked in a cupboard and never been played. All the Gold hardware is intact and uncorroded. However, it’s not brand new and I’d be dishonest not to point out a couple of minor flaws, though they’re barely noticeable and don’t distract from the overall look. The only chip in the paintwork is a small one on the back of the headstock, and there’s a small dent that’s only visible from certain angles just above the bridge pickup. Both are (barely) visiblle in the photos . FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME ANYTIME WITH ANY QUESTIONS, I’LL GET BACK TO YOU ASAP.
