September 8: I have reduced the opening bid. The economy is tight and fellows looking for a high quality Japan Les Paul need a break, too. And I want a particular guitar, so selling the Reborn Old will get me there. Note the tiny line at the headstock/neck join at the back. This has no effect on the play action or tone. This is in the same league with the best Gibsons made. The Japan built ‘lawsuit era’ guitars were made with better woods and more care than American competition, in many cases. Tokai ‘Les Paul Reborn Old’ , made one calendar year only and this one is from 1980 and stamped that way on the headstock back. It’s about 90% condition (maybe 95%) and the original tuners are included, but Gotohs are on it and much better tuners. Otherwise, it is all original as far as I can determine. It’s a remarkable sounding guitar and the sustain is especially impressive. Condition? The body and neck are very clean and no belt buckle rash on the back nor scratches on the body front or edges or neck or headstock. It’s in great shape and never out of my smoke free house. I won this at auction on eBay several years ago and later learned that of all the tokai LP copies, this is nearly the rarest one and considered very sought after as they get collected out of circulation. Note: The neck just below the headstock had a clean break at some point and it was repaired by an expert in the correct way. The back of the neck at the headstock is shown… a line that looks like a tiny crack is evident from the repair. It’s a common LP and SG affliction and on an older guitar, the finish is best left alone and the crack repaired neatly. And this one was handled just that way. Having a ‘lawsuit’ era Japan made guitar is a good investment, but the real reason they are sought is that you can’t afford the equivalent any more! The pickups and build quality and tone and ‘feel’ are as good as guitars that are priced at thousands from custom builders (like Bill Crook Teles and Strats or the Baker Brothers guitars). These older Tokais stand with or exceed the finest guitars made today at any G***** factory. This one plays like a dream and is substantial, but not a ‘log’. You can see the wood grain under the finish and the cream binding and hardware to match is seamless… and gorgeous. It is a really handsome example of a vintage Tokai LP. Because those who know about these guitars will be watching and bidding carefully, I will skip any other details except to mention that the case I found for it has that purple/red satin cover that lies over the guitar in the case. Light brown CNB case with the nice soft loop handle and 4 clasps. A case with just a bit of that vintage look to it; fitting perfectly for this prize of a guitar. Larry Meiners is an expert on old solid guitars and says this at : http://www.historicguitar.com/id13.html In particular the Reborn – Reborn Old and the Love Rocks pre 83 are phenomenal with ALL the mojo of a true vintage Les Paul. I will ship to Canada and USA only. $30 in USA and $40 to Canada. My feedback reviews speak for themselves. I am a guitar guy like you, who happens to spot and buy a really nice vintage guitar now and then. This is one of them!
